Erwan Leroy, former lead compositor at Spin VFX, presents an overview of Nuke Gizmos in a video, showcasing the studio’s open-source collection of compositing tools. The recently released Version 2.0 includes an update to the spill correction tool.

Spin VFX, known for its contributions to renowned TV series like The Expanse, Stranger Things, and Game of Thrones, has unveiled version 2.0 of Nuke Gizmos. This popular open-source toolkit is designed for Foundry’s compositing software and comprises tools employed in the studio’s actual production workflow. The tools address various common tasks such as camera projection, relighting, light wrapping, color matching, and spill correction.

Originally shared as open-source in late 2018, Spin VFX’s Nuke Gizmos have gained recognition, with Ben McEwan, lead compositor at Image Engine, featuring them as one of his most-downloaded tools in 2019 in Ben’s Comp Newsletter. The collection includes 13 tools and gizmos that either extend or offer alternatives to Nuke’s native functionality.

Highlighted tools in the collection include ReProject_3D, facilitating camera projection based on a render point position pass, and Relight_Simple, a simplified relighting node requiring only a normal map to start. Noteworthy additions are Lightwrap_Exponential, providing a more physical response than Nuke’s default light wrap, and Erode_Fine, offering finer control than Nuke’s native Erode filter for matte expansion.

The toolset also covers tasks such as matching black and white points between images, suppressing specific RGB or CMYK colors, and adding synthetic camera effects like grain, glow, or chromatic aberration to compositions.

Nuke Gizmos Version 2.0 introduces an updated Spill Correct tool, enhancing its capability to remove color spill artifacts during bluescreen or greenscreen keying. These tools are available under a GPL license and are compatible with Nuke on Windows, Linux, and macOS.
